Halep finally seals Nike kit deal
Simona Halep, the world number two tennis player, finally has a new sportswear sponsor after a deal was agreed with Nike, the US-based sports apparel giant.
The Romanian announced on Twitter that she had agreed a deal with the brand, quoting Nike’s famous slogan ‘Just Do It’. In her post she wrote: "Just Do It. I just did it.”.
She has been without a sponsor since she split with Adidas, the German sportswear giant, late last year.
It was reported that Adidas had been unwilling to pay Halep the $2 million per year that she is expected to receive from Nike.
At the beginning of this year, Halep won the WTA Shenzhen Open and reached the final of the Australian Open, one of tennis’ ‘grand slams’, without an apparel sponsor.
She joins Sloane Stephens, the US tennis star, as a recent addition to Nike’s endorsement portfolio.
Halep's sponsorship rights are managed by the Lagardère Sports agency.
