The Ryder Cup, the biennial showpiece golf tournament between Team Europe and Team USA, has confirmed its 2031 edition will be hosted by the Camiral Golf and Wellness Resort in Girona, Spain.

The venue, formerly known as PGA Catalunya, is located in northeast Spain and has hosted a DP World Tour (formerly European Tour) event three times, most recently in 2022. It also has a contract in place to stage the tour’s Catalunya Championship from 2028 to 2030.

Camiral Resort becomes the second course in Spain to stage a Ryder Cup, after Andalusia’s Valderrama Golf Club, which hosted the tournament in 1997.

As part of the agreement, Catalan brand Estrella Damm has been named as the 2031 event's official beer, which builds on the brand’s title sponsorship of the Catalunya Championship at the same venue.

Guy Kinnings, chief executive of the European Tour Group, said: “The Ryder Cup has grown significantly since Spain last hosted it in 1997. It is one of the world’s leading sporting events, which brings significant economic benefits and global exposure to a host region and country, so we could not be happier to be taking it to Costa Brava and Barcelona for the first time, and to Spain for the second time.”

Jon Rahm is currently the top-ranked (via the World Golf rankings) Spanish golfer, at 66th in the world, and was a key part of Team Europe winning the 2023 Ryder Cup in Italy. Over the years, 11 Spaniards have represented Team Europe, the joint second highest of any European country after England.

It would also mark just the fourth time the event is hosted by continental Europe, with the UK and Ireland both being prominent host nations.

The upcoming US Ryder Cup later this year will be held at the Bethpage Black course in New York, between September 25 and 28. The next European edition will be held at Adare Manor, Ireland, in 2027.

The last edition, meanwhile, was the 2023 Ryder Cup, held at Marco Simone, on the outskirts of the Italian capital, Rome.
