A two-year broadcast rights deal in the Netherlands, between Dutch sports broadcaster Ziggo Sport and nascent hydrogen-powered off-road racing series Extreme H, has been struck.

Through a tie-up unveiled today, Ziggo will cover the Extreme H World Cup when that series gets underway in early October, after having shown the 'Final Lap' last farewell of the Extreme H forerunner, Extreme E, across October 4 and 5.

Both of those events - the World Cup being the inaugural edition of that competition - are scheduled for Qiddiya City in Saudi Arabia.

The agreement entails Extreme E and Extreme H coverage in both English and Dutch, and also across the Ziggo Sport digital platform - Ziggo Sport TotaalGO. This will give fans access to live races, highlights, and behind-the-scenes content.

Ali Russell, Extreme H's managing director, has now said: "Dutch fans are among the most passionate in motorsport, and this deal ensures they can follow the full story of the world’s first hydrogen racing series across both traditional and digital platforms. This partnership is another important step in growing the global reach of Extreme H.”

The Extreme H World Cup (with the state-backed Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund PIF as its presenting partner) will be the first international race event to use hydrogen-powered vehicles.

Marcel Beerthuizen, director of Ziggo Sport, added: "This partnership allows us to offer fans access to a brand-new form of world-class racing, combining entertainment, innovation, and sustainability. We look forward to showcasing the series across the Ziggo Sport channels over the next two years.”

In terms of recent Extreme H media rights activity, earlier this week, an expansion of the series' existing deal with US broadcaster Fox Sports was unveiled across Mexico and Central America.

Extreme H is the hydrogen-based spinoff of Extreme E, which started in 2021 but canceled the remainder of its 2024 season after events in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) and Scotland to prioritize the series’ transition to hydrogen.

The FIA initially planned for Extreme H to become an official world championship for 2026, but in December last year, it announced the launch of the Extreme H World Cup this year instead.

The new hydrogen event will feature an off-road race format to showcase the viability of hydrogen power as a clean energy solution. Organizers will also prioritize gender parity within motorsports by fielding teams that have an equal number of male and female drivers.
