The BBC, the UK's public-service broadcaster, has extended its deal with the organizers of The Open, British golf's most iconic tournament, through the 2027 edition of the annual event.

Through a deal renewal unveiled today (July 17), BBC Sport will continue as the UK radio partner of the tournament, as well as providing TV highlights and digital clips.

The agreement - struck by the BBC with the R&A controlling body - has been announced on the day that the 2025 edition of The Open gets underway at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.

Specifically, radio commentaries will be made available across 5 Live and BBC Sounds, while highlights will be available both on linear BBC TV as well as on the BBC Sport website and other digital platforms. In addition, there will be live digital text coverage of the event, which runs through until Sunday (July 20).

The BBC showed live TV coverage of the iconic UK golf event for the final time in 2016 - since then, domestic rights to the tournament have been held by pay-TV giant Sky. The last rights deal to that effect was announced in January 2024, running until 2028.

In terms of international media rights to The Open, these are distributed by heavyweight sports marketing agency IMG, with that agreement running through 2032.

Prominent international broadcasters of this year's event include NBC in the US (with that network's overall deal reportedly bringing in $50 million annually for The R&A).
