The German Grand Prix will remain on the MotoGP calendar until 2031 after a new contract was agreed today with Dorna Sports, the promoter of the elite motorcycle racing series.

A new five-year agreement, beginning in 2027, will see the long-running MotoGP round continue to take place at the iconic Sachsenring circuit in Saxony in eastern Germany.

The annual race at Sachsenring is claimed to be the single biggest sporting event in Germany – with attendance surpassing 250,000 fans.

The German Grand Prix has been held at the track since 1998. Next year, the race will take place from July 10 to 12.

Dorna Sports agreed on an early extension with German automobile club ADAC and was supported by the local Saxony government.

The current contract was due to expire at the end of the 2026 season. 

Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports, said: “We’re delighted to announce we’ll be racing in Germany until 2031. It’s an important market for MotoGP and a fantastic event for the quarter of a million fans who join us at the Sachsenring to break records year-on-year.

“We’re looking forward to setting more benchmarks together with the promoter, the ADAC, and want to thank them and the Government of Saxony for their commitment to MotoGP.”

Gerd Ennser, ADAC Sport president, added: “MotoGP at the Sachsenring is the most significant national motor racing event, attracting more than a quarter of a million fans.

“We aim to continue this success story and have reached early agreement with MotoGP to ensure that the Grand Prix will take place at the Sachsenring in the long term. The event is enormously popular throughout the region.”

Earlier this year, Dorna also agreed a multi-year extension to continue staging the French Grand Prix at the ionic Le Mans circuit until 2031, and signed new contracts in Spain, keeping the Valencia Grand Prix at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit and the Catalan Grand Prix at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for another five years.

Dorna is looking to reinforce its racing calendar after securing an unprecedented MotoGP rights renewal through 2060 back in September 2024.

That deal came after the promoter was acquired Liberty Media, which owns motor racing’s iconic Formula 1 series.

Through that agreement, which was completed earlier this month, Dorna will remain an independently run company attributed to Liberty Media’s Formula One Group tracking stock.

Liberty acquired 86% of MotoGP, with the series' current management retaining approximately 14% of their equity in the business.
