The BBC, the UK's public-service broadcaster, has drawn the largest UK television viewership of the 2025 UEFA Women’s Euro national teams soccer tournament so far, as England defeated Sweden on penalties last night (July 17).

England’s quarter-final victory, after a dramatic penalty shootout which in turn followed on from a 2-2 draw, attracted a peak audience of 7.4 million on the main BBC One channel.

The Lionesses’ comeback win, after falling behind 2-0, also delivered a peak audience share of 65%.

The match, in addition, generated nearly 3 million online streams across BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport website, and the app. The BBC Sport website’s live text page attracted 8.3 million views.

The BBC claims that, so far, total online requests for Women’s Euro content have reached 8.1 million across its digital platforms.

The Lionesses will now face Italy in the semi-final, after the latter side defeated Norway 2-1 on Wednesday (July 16).

For England’s final group stage match win against Wales, commercial broadcaster ITV drew an average of 4.2 million viewers, peaking at 4.6 million, across all platforms.

ITV and the BBC are sharing rights to the women's soccer tournament, and split the three group stage matches.

The BBC secured rights to three of the four quarter-final matches, with Spain’s match against Switzerland today (July 19) adding to its coverage of England and Italy’s respective wins.

ITV will air the last quarterfinal match between France and Germany tomorrow, meanwhile, and will also be showing England’s semi-final against Italy on Tuesday (July 22), with the BBC airing the other semi-final the following day.

Both the BBC and ITV will simultaneously broadcast the final on July 27.
