The European Handball Federation (EHF) has announced a new “milestone” broadcast partnership with Viaplay that will see the EHF’s continental competitions broadcast by the Nordic media group across the region through 2030.

The deal encompasses both the national team EHF Men’s and Women’s European Championships, as well as the EHF’s club competitions, namely the men’s and women’s EHF Champions League and European League.

Covering Denmark, the Faroe Islands, Finland, Norway, and Sweden, the deal begins immediately with the January 11 resumption of the EHF Women’s Champions League and European League and will run through the 2029-30 campaign.

Should a team from any of the five covered territories reach the showpiece Final Four of any EHF club competition, then free-to-air highlights coverage of that team will also be included in the deal.

Danish club Aalborg Handbold finished runner-up in the 2024 EHF Champions League Final Four, while the Women's Champions League has been won a combined 11 times by sides from Denmark (seven) and Norway (four), including three consecutive titles for Norse side Vipers Kristiansand.

In the European League, meanwhile, the women's competition was won in the 2023-24 season by Norse side Storhamar, having been won by Denmark's Ikast a year prior in an all-Danish affair. Denmark boasts the most Women's European League winners of any country, with 10.

Furthermore, for the EHF’s biennial European Championships in 2028 and 2030, all games featuring the national teams of the Nordic countries will be featured free-to-air on Viaplay, a continuation of the existing agreement between the EHF and Viaplay that has run since the 2022 edition and covers the 2026 Euros also.

This will be especially relevant in 2028 when the EHF Women’s Euros will be jointly hosted by Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, and the men’s Euros 2030 where Denmark will jointly host with Poland and Czechia (Denmark and Sweden will also jointly host the Men’s Euro 2026).

The EHF Beach Handball European Championships in 2027 and 2029 are also covered as part of this deal.

Speaking on the new partnership, EHF secretary general Martin Hausleitner stated: “This marks the prolongation of a long-lasting and important partnership in one of the key regions for European handball. The deal secures the comprehensive coverage of the future EHF Euros and thus provides a profound basis for the further development and growth of the sport.”

David Szelezak, managing director of the EHF Marketing commercial body, added: “This is a milestone agreement for European club handball, enabling us to bring the top club competitions to both our existing fan base and new audiences.

“With its longevity until 2030, the deal ensures the widespread coverage of our premium competitions including an enhanced visibility for our sponsors and partners. This development is not only beneficial to European handball as such but also to all Scandinavian clubs participating in our competitions.”

In the Norwegian market, Viaplay will split its rights for the EHF Euros, Champions League, and European League with national broadcaster TV2, while in Denmark, Viaplay’s rights for the EHF Champions League are split with the Danish Broadcasting Corporation, which holds the rights to one match per round in the men’s and women’s competitions through the 2025-26 campaign.
