S4C, the Welsh-language free-to-air broadcaster, has acquired live rights in its home market to the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

The broadcaster will provide Welsh-language coverage of the event, which will be held from July 24 to August 2 in Glasgow, Scotland.

The deal marks the first time S4C will deliver live coverage of the Commonwealth Games.

The partnership will allow audiences across Wales to follow the country’s journey at Glasgow 2026, the 23rd edition of the games.

Wales is one of only six nations to have competed at every Commonwealth Games since the event began in 1930.

The event will feature 10 days of competition and include only 10 sports and six para sports, with 47 medal events across six disciplines.

Glasgow will be hosting the event for a second time, having previously done so in 2014.

Katie Sadleir, chief executive of Commonwealth Sport, said: “The Commonwealth Games are unique in bringing together athletes and communities from across our 74 nations and territories, and it is fantastic that Welsh-speaking audiences will be able to experience the excitement, drama and inspiration of the Games live in their own language for the first time.”

Last month, UK commercial network Channel 5 landed a deal to show a daily highlights program from the Commonwealth Games via a sublicensing agreement with media giant Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD).

WBD holds exclusive live rights to the event in the UK, with the broadcaster planning to air more than 600 hours of live coverage during the event via a dedicated linear channel.

The sublicensing deal with Channel 5 ends a 72-year relationship between the event and the BBC, the UK's public-service broadcaster.

The BBC has aired every Commonwealth Games edition since 1954 but was outbid by WBD for rights to this year’s edition last December.
