Movistar Plus, the Spanish pay-TV operator owned by telecoms giant Telefonica, has extended its broadcast partnership with golf’s DP World Tour in a five-year deal that will see it air the iconic Ryder Cup’s return to Spain.
Under the new deal, running through 2031, Movistar Plus retains its exclusive rights in the country to air all events from the tour, including the biennial men’s Ryder Cup tournament between teams from Europe and the US.
A highlight of the deal will be the 2031 Ryder Cup, to be held at Camiral Golf and Wellness in Girona, Spain. The event will mark the return of the tournament to Spain after 34 years, having last hosted the 1997 edition at Valderrama Golf Club in Cadiz.
In a statement, Movistar Plus said: “With this renewal, Movistar Plus continues to strengthen a unique golf offering at a time of significant transformation across the international golf landscape, consolidating a model built on stability, continuity, and the best possible experience for fans.
“The platform will continue to provide exclusive golf coverage through its dedicated channels, featuring live broadcasts, special programming, analysis, documentaries, and the finest team of experts covering every major event on the calendar.”
The rights strengthen Movistar’s position in Spain as the ‘home of golf,’ having launched a dedicated channel, Movistar Golf, to house its rights to the DP World Tour and Ryder Cup, as well as all four men’s majors - The Masters, PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship - LIV Golf, the Asian Tour, LPGA Tour, Ladies European Tour, and the five women’s major championships.
Rights to US golf’s PGA Tour in Spain are held by media giant Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), which provides coverage through its Max streaming platform, meanwhile.
WBD, which has held PGA Tour rights since 2019, previously had a sub-licensing agreement in place with Movistar Plus from 2002 to 2025. However, the long-standing deal ended when WBD decided to stream the tour exclusively on Max.
This deal comes as Movistar continues to consolidate its rights portfolio, having recently secured an agreement with sports streaming service DAZN that will see games from Spain’s top-tier Liga ACB made available to all Movistar Plus subscribers.
The deal came after Liga ACB announced its decision to end its long-standing domestic broadcast partnership with Movistar and move to DAZN in a new multi-year deal last July.
Movistar Plus also covers Spanish soccer’s top-tier LaLiga domestically until 2032, alongside DAZN, and last month added rights to England's iconic FA Cup competition through 2027-28.
