Technology giant Siemens and renewable solutions provider GeoPura have been brought on board by the all-electric SUV motor racing series Extreme E to consult on the development of the car for its planned hydrogen-powered series.

Announced today (July 10), the consultancy services provided will focus on industrial software and technical aspects of the vehicle for Extreme H, plans for which were announced in February 2022.

The SUV to be used for the new series will use the same powertrain and chassis as those in Extreme E but will be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell.

The technology is already used in Extreme E to charge the cars’ batteries, with it provided by the series’ green hydrogen power partner Enowa, which is the energy, water, and hydrogen subsidiary of the Saudi eco-city Neom. Enowa will continue to provide the solution for powering on-site operations and infrastructure at races.

Siemens and GeoPura will work with the Extreme E technical team, motorsport manufacturer Spark Racing Technology, and various suppliers and partners on the development of the Extreme H car. A prototype is due to be unveiled later this year.

Alejandro Agag, founder and chief executive of Extreme E, said: “Our new partnership with Siemens and GeoPura is an important milestone as we edge closer to launching Extreme H, which will be a world-first for motorsport, and widening our hydrogen initiatives.

“Hydrogen is a key pillar for the future of the automotive industry and, as a series which was designed to be a testbed for innovation and solutions for mobility, collaborating with such experienced businesses to develop the most innovative hydrogen solution possible is a significant step.”

Tony Hemmelgarn, president and chief executive of Siemens Digital Industries Software, commented: “By pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved with hydrogen energy in an extreme racing environment, we can have a meaningful impact on the development of cleaner, more sustainable power for all.

"Bringing our expertise to the Extreme H racing series, and in particular its car, will allow the team to build, test, optimize, and validate advanced designs in a digital environment.”

Andrew Cunningham, chief executive of GeoPura, added: “GeoPura is excited to contribute its expertise and be involved in such an important and critical project.

"Our business is strongly aligned to the purpose of the Extreme series, and the extension into off-road hydrogen racing will without a doubt raise awareness of zero-emission alternatives for the mobility sector, have a positive impact on the wider supply chain, and continue to highlight the ongoing effects of climate change.”

In June, Extreme E hired Mark Grain in the newly created role of technical director, with his remit to include a significant focus on the development of Extreme H.
