The Royal and Ancient (R&A) UK-based golfing body has announced a partnership with Cisco that will see the wireless technology and communications firm deliver critical AI networking infrastructure to its iconic championships and new headquarters.
As the official network supplier of the R&A, Cisco will provide network infrastructure and AI technology to support its championships – The Open and Women’s Open – as well as the body’s new headquarters in St. Andrews, Scotland, which is due to open later this year.

Through the partnership, Cisco will deliver routing, switching, and wireless technology, as well as network security products, with the technology to be used to power services, including scoring and the management of broadcast, media, on-site sales, and facilities.
The R&A said the partnership will ensure it will meet growing AI-era demands, including increased bandwidth requirements, providing fans with access to WiFi across the course, and giving the body greater visibility and insights across its digital footprint.
Neil Armit, chief commercial officer at The R&A, said: “Cisco's expertise and world-leading technology will help strengthen the foundations that underpin our Championships and organisation. From supporting the critical technology operations at The Open and the AIG Women's Open to enhancing connectivity for fans, broadcasters, players, and media, this partnership will help us deliver world-class experiences while ensuring that they remain secure, resilient, and future-ready.
"As we prepare to open our new global headquarters in St Andrews later this year, Cisco will also play an important role in creating a modern, connected workplace for our staff and stakeholders. Together, we are investing in the infrastructure and innovation that will support our long-term purpose to open golf to the world."
The partnership starts with the upcoming Open, which is due to run from July 16 to 19 at the Royal Birkdale, with Cisco currently installing close to 1,000 wireless access points, with Wi-Fi 7-capable edition for the media center and “other high priority areas.”
The deal continues Cisco’s growing presence within golf, having secured a similar agreement with the US Golf Association, the Advocates Professional Golf Association Tour, and Stephen Curry’s Underrated Golf Tour, as well as several invitational matches.
Most recently, the company extended its wide-ranging deal with motor racing’s McLaren Racing organization, covering its Formula 1 and Electric Racing teams.
Gordon Thomson, president of Cisco EMEA, said: “As AI transforms every industry, sports organizations need the right technology foundation to harness its full potential.
“Together with The R&A, Cisco is proud to help create a more connected, secure and intelligent future for golf – one that respects the traditions of the game and embraces what’s next.”
