Organizers of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games have announced Cooley, the US-based international law firm, as an official provider for the flagship multi-sport events and Team USA as it continues to add to its commercial partnership list.

Under the agreement, Cooley will provide a full suite of legal services to LA28 "over the next three years" to help organizers navigate the commercial, operational and regulatory complexities associated with hosting a global event.

Cooley has experience advising top-tier sports organizations through its Sport+ offering, with the firm supporting clients on matters including transactions and financings to intellectual property, regulatory compliance, and dispute resolution.

As part of the partnership, Cooley will also offer some pro bono legal support to LA28 as part of the event’s inclusivity goal.

Rachel Proffitt, chief executive of Cooley, said: “There is an extraordinary energy and purpose behind building an event of this scale — one that unites athletes, fans and communities around the world.

“At Cooley, we are proud to contribute to that effort, drawing on our experience supporting some of the most dynamic companies, leagues and emerging platforms in sports.

“Just as importantly, this partnership allows us to create meaningful impact beyond the Games — giving back to the Los Angeles community in ways that reflect our values as a firm.”

The new agreement adds to LA28’s other legal partnership, with LA-based law firm Gibson Dunn also providing legal services and assistance to the Games’ organizing committee, as well as to Team USA, as part of its role as an official provider.

For the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, PwC France served as the provider of legal services for that event, as part of an overall consulting services role.

Elisabeth Freinberg, chief legal officer of LA28, said: “The LA28 Games will set a new standard for what a home Games can be — and having the right partners in place is how we get there.

“We’re excited to work with Cooley as an Official Legal Services Provider, leveraging their experience and strategic insight to help deliver a Games that reflects the spirit, creativity, and innovation of Los Angeles.”

The new agreement comes as LA28 organizers ramp up their commercial partnerships, most recently signing a partnership with Musco Lighting as a new commercial partner in mid-June, with that company becoming the sports presentation and broadcast lighting provider for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as for Team USA.

It will be responsible for the provision of all 'field-of-play' lighting at the games, as well as the lighting for other aspects of the Olympics and Paralympics, such as the post-event presentations.

In terms of other LA28 commercial activity over the last few months, late April saw the International Olympic Committee (IOC) unveil heavyweight international bank JPMorganChase as a new sponsor, in a deal that also covers LA28 and Team USA.

In March, meanwhile, the organizing committee brought in Ticketmaster and Sports Illustrated Tickets (SI Tickets) as the verified resale platforms for the games.
