CBS Sports, an arm of the major US network owned by media giant Paramount, has announced plans to launch a free digital 24-hour channel dedicated to soccer next month.
The broadcaster said its new CBS Sports Golazo Network, to debut on April 11, will house its portfolio of live and archived match rights, highlights, studio shows, and documentaries.
CBS holds rights in the US to the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference men's club competitions, as well as top-tier men’s leagues including Italy’s Serie A, the Scottish Premiership, the Argentine Primera Division, and Brazil’s Campeonato Brasileiro Série A.
It also has rights to the domestic National Women’s Soccer League and English soccer’s Women’s Super League, as well as South American Concacaf national team competitions and Asian Football Confederation competitions.
CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus said: “The launch of the CBS Sports Golazo Network demonstrates the continued evolution of our industry-leading soccer coverage as we build on the incredible momentum, we have created the past three years delivering authentic, informative, engaging content across multiple platforms.
“Led by our best-in-class studio shows and announcers, more than 2,400 live soccer matches a year and now a dedicated soccer streaming network, CBS Sports is the ultimate destination for soccer fans.”
The centerpiece of its studio shows will be a daily two-hour program on weekdays called Morning Footy, which will see a four-person studio panel cover a variety of topics from the world of soccer.
The channel will stream on CBS Sports digital platforms, as well as the Paramount+ and Pluto TV streaming services.
Jeff Gerttula, executive vice president for CBS Sports and CBS News and Stations, said: “Interest in soccer has never been stronger. By launching a first-of-its-kind streaming network in the US, dedicated to soccer globally, CBS Sports Golazo Network provides a tremendous growth opportunity by delivering unprecedented, round-the-clock coverage for passionate soccer fans.
"CBS Sports Golazo Network capitalizes on our existing soccer rights by building free audiences around CBS Sports and Pluto TV platforms while driving new subscribers and enhancing the sports experience for Paramount+."
