Global sports commercial agency Relevent has announced that president and partner Boris Gartner will step into the role of chief executive of the company, replacing co-founder Danny Sillman.

Relevent credits Gartner’s promotion to his role in the creation of the Relevent Football Partners subsidiary, of which he is also the chief executive.

Sillman said: “Boris has been a one-of-a-kind partner in transforming Relevent into a leading and trusted commercial partner to the most influential leagues and competitions in global sport.”

Gartner joined Relevent from Mexico’s Televisa in August 2018 to head up its LaLiga North America arm, a joint venture with the titular Spanish soccer competition.

Continuing, Sillman added: “His incredible work as president of Relevent and CEO of Relevent Football Partners — including standing up offices around the world, hiring a best-in-class executive team, and driving the negotiations that led to this fall’s record-breaking global commercial deals — further underscores that he is the right person to lead Relevent into this next chapter.

Gartner oversaw recruitment at Relevent Football partners and the formation of its commercial strategy, as well as leading on a media rights and sponsorship cycle for European soccer’s UEFA governing body that Relevent says generated a record cycle-over-cycle revenue uplift.

That recruitment period led to the appointment of David Baddeley (chief financial officer), Brian Oliver (chief commercial officer), Oliver Holland (chief media rights officer), Amy Phillips (chief communications and marketing officer), Benjamin Blanco (director of commercial strategy, and partnerships, sponsorships, and licensing), and Tom Burrows (director of strategy and partnership operations, media) all at Relevent Football Partners.

The tie-up between UEFA (acting through UC3, the joint venture between that body and the European Club Association) and Relevent was confirmed in mid-March. Relevent – based in the US and backed by Stephen Ross, owner of the Miami Dolphins NFL franchise – has replaced long-time UEFA partner Team Marketing, for which the loss of this contract represents a serious blow.

Sillman, chief executive at Relevent since mid-2017, will become executive chair of the US company.
