PROVO, Utah—Nu Skin Enterprises, Inc. (NYSE: NUS) today was designated by the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) as the Official Sponsor of the U.S.Olympic Spirit Award program for the 2000, 2002 and 2004 U.S. Olympic Teams.
The sponsorship of the award was announced at a press conference at Nu Skin Enterprises headquarters in Provo, Utah, before news media and government, community and business leaders. Mark Lewis, USOC Managing Director of Sales and Corporate Sponsorships, made the announcement in conjunction with Salt Lake Organizing Committee President and CEO Mitt Romney. Nu Skin Enterprises Chairman Blake M. Roney and CEO Steven J. Lund accepted the sponsorship on behalf of the company.
The U.S. Olympic Spirit Award recognizes U.S. athletes who best exemplify the spirit of Olympic competition – not necessarily through their victories, but rather through the courage, dedication and determination they demonstrate in the Olympic arena. Past U.S. Olympic Spirit Award winners include Greg Louganis (1988), Gail Devers (1992), Carl Lewis (1996) and Kerri Strug (1996).
‘The purpose of the U.S. Olympic Spirit Award is to recognize those U.S. athletes whose extraordinary contributions to the spirit of the Olympic Games inspire us all,’ Mr. Lund said. ‘Whether they win Olympic gold or not, the U.S. Olympic Spirit Award nominees win our admiration and respect.’
Twelve candidates for the award will be nominated at the end of the 2000, 2002 and 2004 Olympic and Paralympic Games by a panel of U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Alumni. The nominees – three male Olympians, three female Olympians, three male Paralympians and three female Paralympians – will be prominently featured on displays at the U.S. Olympic Training Centers and on a web site linked to both www.usolympicteam.com and www.nuskinenterprises.com. The public will be invited to vote for a nominee in each category via the two web sites. The athlete in each category who receives the most votes will be selected as a recipient of the U.S. Olympic Spirit Award. Nu Skin Enterprises will host the athlete nominees at an awards banquet, and the company will make a donation to U.S. Olympic-related charities in each award recipient’s name.
‘Nu Skin Enterprises is pleased to sponsor the U.S. Olympic Spirit Award, which represents standards of vision, commitment and excellence,’ Mr. Lund said. ‘Our affiliation with these standards reinforces the core corporate values of Nu Skin Enterprises. We will likewise recognize our independent distributors as they exhibit these standards.’
