The Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) has elected Robin Mitchell, the only standing candidate, to its permanent presidency.
The Fijian was elected unopposed as ANOC’s president yesterday (October 19), although a vote was still held.

A total of 182 votes were cast, with 177 in favor and five against. Two other national Olympic committees abstained.
Mitchell was confirmed as the only standing candidate for the presidential election in July this year.
Mitchell has also been a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since 1994 and is now on the IOC’s executive board.
Following his permanent appointment, Mitchell said: “Thank you for all your support and now we have to think about what to do next.

Mitchell had held the presidency on an interim basis for the last four years having taken over from Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah in 2018 when the Kuwaiti stood down after charges of forgery were brought against him in Switzerland.
Sheikh Ahmad was sentenced to a 14-month prison sentence, with a further 15 months suspended, by a Swiss court last September after being found guilty of forgery.
The ANOC has also elected a new senior vice president, with Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani also standing unchallenged for that position.
The president of the Qatar Olympic Committee received 166 votes in favor, with 11 against.
