The Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) has announced that Belgium’s Ingmar De Vos will run unopposed for the role of president.

De Vos, president of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) governing body, will stand for election as the only candidate to succeed current president Francesco Ricci Bitti, whose third and final term will end on December 31.

By the March 25 deadline, De Vos, who is also a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and sits on the ASOIF council, was the only nominee for the presidency, despite every ASOIF full member body having the ability to nominate an executive body member for the role.

The election for the ASOIF presidency will take place on April 9 at the 48th ASOIF general assembly, which will be held at the annual SportAccord World Sports and Business Summit in Birmingham, England from April 7 to 11.

De Vos is a member of the SportAccord executive committee.

The presidency of ASOIF is always decided in the year an Olympic Games takes place, with the elected representative taking up the role on January 1 of the following year.

De Vos has served on the ASOIF council since 2019, and also serves on the IOC coordination commission for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA28), with his presence around the event a likely driver behind his presidency bid.

ASOIF is already looking ahead to LA28. At the same meeting where De Vos was re-elected for a third term as an ASOIF council member in June 2023, the body announced that the international federations of sport climbing, surfing, and skate sports had all been granted full membership of ASOIF.

The three sports are all set to feature at LA28 and take the number of full ASOIF members up to 33.

Over the course of the upcoming ASOIF presidential term (2024-28), De Vos will end his role as FEI president after four terms.

De Vos was elected for a third and final term in November 2022, running unopposed, and will serve in the role he has held since 2014, through 2026.
