US private equity firm Arctos Partners has announced the hiring of Brian Lafemina as an operating partner.

As part of the new consultatory role, Lafemina will use his experience to advise and assist in sourcing opportunities and enhancing Arctos’ value-added capabilities, and will act as an advisor to the firm’s portfolio franchises through Arctos Operating Platform.

Lafemina has more than three decades of experience in sports operations, leadership, and revenue generation, having spent 20 years at The Madison Square Garden Company.

This included leading the business operations for the New York Rangers, New York Knicks, and New York Liberty professional sports franchises, as well as being a member of the team responsible for planning the $1bn renovation of The Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Lafemina most recently served as chief business officer for the Los Angeles 2028 Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games, and as president of the Washington Commanders, meanwhile.

Ian Charles, co-founder and co-managing partner of Arctos, said: “With the demand for sports as an asset class continuing to grow, Brian’s data-centric approach to operations and revenue is extremely valuable to Arctos and its partners.”

Doc O’Connor, co-founder and co-managing partner of Arctos, added: “Brian is an accomplished and distinguished sports executive with an illustrious career. He brings a unique set of experiences from both a league and team perspective in managing and operating all aspects of a franchise.”

Brian Lafemina said: “The scientific approach Arctos has delivered to sports investing is truly remarkable. I look forward to joining this team of experts on the heels of an impressive fund raise as they continue to help leading professional sports owners solve complex problems and unlock further value.”

Last week Arctos announced that the second iteration of its Arctos Sports Partners Fund (Fund II) has closed with almost double its target funding secured.

Fund II secured over $4.1 billion in funding commitments from a range of investors, and has claimed that the combined wealth of it and its predecessor Fund I have created the largest sports exclusive funding pool worldwide.

The two combined funds represent around $7 billion in wealth directly for use in sports, and as much as 30% of Fund II’s capital has already been dispensed across several investments and a variety of sports.

Most prominently, in December 2023 Arctos became a minority shareholder in French soccer giants Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

Other prominent investments include a stake in the Aston Martin F1 motor racing team, the Utah Jazz NBA basketball franchise owners Smith Entertainment Group, and Philadelphia 76ers (NBA) and New Jersey Devils (NHL ice hockey) franchise owners Harris Blitzer Sports Entertainment.
