The All-Star Game of North America's Major League Baseball (MLB) has drawn a record low in terms of viewing numbers for the second successive year. The 3-2 victory by the National League over the American League in the US city of Seattle, Washington, on Tuesday (July 11) was watched by just over 7 million viewers on the Fox network, down from 7.51 million last year. This year’s All-Star Game TV rating (the percentage of TV viewers believed to be watching the game, extrapolated from a small sample size) was 3.9, compared to 4.2 in 2022. Last year, the American League beat the National League 3-2 in Los Angeles. Over the last seven years, the All-Star Game has been watched by - at those points - record-low audiences on five occasions. However, the event did generate the largest audience on Fox since American football’s NFL Super Bowl in February, and US TV’s largest primetime audience in close to a month - since the playoffs of basketball’s NBA. It also remains comfortably the most-watched All-Star event from the main US sports leagues in 2023, ahead of the equivalent fixtures of both the NFL and the NBA. Seattle secured All-Star Game hosting rights for this year in late 2021. Meanwhile, the MLB has outlined its World Tour schedule for 2024, taking in four countries outside the US and Canada next year. The international circuit will begin in March, with games between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres in Seoul, South Korea. These games will kick off the entire 2024 MLB season. Then, in April, the Houston Astros and the Colorado Rockies will face off for two fixtures in Mexico City. These events join the MLB fixtures in London, UK, in June 2024 between the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies, which were announced in late June. For the Phillies, this will represent their first international trip since 1977 and their second overall. As well as these regular-season series, there will be a pair of Spring Training Contests between the Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays in the Dominican Republic in early March, before the league visits Seoul. The Seoul visit will mark the ninth international opener to an MLB season, and the first since 2019 (before the Covid-19 pandemic). The MLB’s 2023 international fixture set has seen a quartet of games split equally between Mexico City and London, with the Mexico games between the San Francisco Giants and the Padres taking place in late April and the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals facing off in London on June 24 and 25.
