Bolton bid boosted for 2035 Ryder Cup as funding package promised

An English venue has not hosted the iconic men's golf tournament since 2002.

Bolton, in northwest England, has been added to the list of potential destinations for the 2035 edition of men's team's golf's Ryder Cup.

The Hulton Park location in Bolton - on the edge of Manchester - could become the first English host for the Ryder Cup - contested biennially between Team Europe and Team USA - in over 30 years.

The mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, has now confirmed a funding package will be provided to support the bid. That package will focus on building infrastructure around a potential new golf course, including a new link road between two motorways that has been allocated funding of £70 million ($93.2 million).

Burnham has said: "We're deadly serious about it. We believe we can land [the Ryder Cup] and now it's a case of putting in a firm bid next month and hopefully a decision soon."

Bolton could potentially face competition from two English rivals for hosting rights in nine years' time - London Golf Club (in Kent), and Luton Hoo in Bedfordshire.

Plans previously existed for Bolton to bid for hosting rights for the 2026 and 2031 editions of the Ryder Cup, but official bids were never sent through.

Burnham added: "We've had promising conversations with organisers about bringing the tournament to a bespoke, world-class course at Hulton Park."

"But it will only be possible with the right infrastructure. We're doing our bit to make it happen.

"We're committing up to £70 million to deliver a transport package to not only help spectators get to the site but deliver major benefits for the people living in the surrounding areas."

England has not hosted the Ryder Cup since 2002, when it took place at The Belfry, the iconic course near Birmingham.

The last edition to take place in Europe - the biennial tournament has alternate iterations hosted by Europe and the US - was held in Rome, two years ago.

The 2025 Ryder Cup, meanwhile, took place in New York state in the US, and was dramatically won 15-13 (28 points are available in total) by Team Europe.

In terms of future European hosts, the 2027 Ryder Cup is set for County Limerick, Ireland, while the 2031 tournament will travel to Camiral, near Barcelona in Spain.

Earlier this month, the PGA of America - one of the two organizing bodies behind the Ryder Cup, alongside Ryder Cup Europe - extended its broadcast rights agreement with media giant NBCUniversal and its Versant division.
