The Austrian Grand Prix will remain on the calendar of motor racing’s iconic Formula 1 (F1) until 2030, after a deal was struck between the series and race promoter Projekt Spielberg GmbH & Co KG.
The deal represents a three-year extension on top of the renewal from 2024 to 2027 that was announced only four months ago, in March.
The latest add-on was confirmed during the 2023 Austrian GP race weekend on July 1 and 2, in which Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing won at the racetrack that bears his team’s name and is owned by the energy drinks heavyweight.
Having featured initially in F1 between 1970-87 and again between 1997-2003, the track’s current spell as the Red Bull Ring began in 2011 following financial support from the corporation’s co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz, who died in October last year. It then began hosting F1 again in 2014.
Stefano Domenicali, president and chief executive of Formula 1, said: “I am delighted to announce this news with our exceptional partners in Austria.
“The vision and passion of Dietrich Mateschitz, a man who loved this sport, made this all possible, and it is a very special moment and a tribute to him that we can confirm we will be racing at this incredible venue until 2030.
“The race in Austria is a big favorite for the drivers and all our fans and we are looking forward to many years of excitement and action that are ahead of us.”
Erich Wolf, the Red Bull Ring’s general manager, added: “The Red Bull Ring is excited to announce that we will continue our special relationship with Formula 1 until 2030. This long-term deal represents Formula 1’s strong commitment to Austria and Styria [the local region].
“With pride and joy, we celebrate the tenth joint year at Spielberg. Our special thanks go to the fans and all supporters.”
Austria's main F1 broadcaster, in a deal running through 2027, is pay-TV heavyweight Sky.
The next race of the 2023 F1 season will take place at Silverstone in the UK on Sunday, July 9, and the campaign runs until November 26 in Abu Dhabi.
Silverstone is one of three F1 tracks whose hosting contract is currently set to expire after 2024. The last circuit to have its F1 future extended was the Baku City Circuit in Azerbaijan’s capital, which will stage races until 2026.
