Steven A. Cohen, owner of Major League Baseball’s New York Mets, has acquired the ownership rights to a team in the new TGL golf competition.

Cohen’s outfit will represent New York in the team golf league and will be the fourth of six teams in the PGA Tour-affiliated TGL, run by TMRW Sports.

Cohen stated of his purchase: “As golf continues to grow in popularity, there’s a demand for enhanced access to the sport and the world’s top players.”

He added: “TGL’s primetime schedule will offer an up-close, fast-paced, and innovative take on the sport that will appeal to traditional golf and new fans alike. We’re excited to be a part of TGL and build a team that makes New York proud."

The American is the founder of investment firm Point72.

TGL was founded by golfing greats Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, alongside businessman Mike McCarley, CEO of both TGL and the trio’s sports entertainment venture TMRW Sports.

The TGL will see teams of PGA Tour competitors compete across 15 matches, two semi-finals, and a final over the season, staged in a purpose-built arena in Palm Beach, Florida. The arena will feature a virtual course as well as short-game greens in a technology-focused experience.

TGL has already secured teams representing Atlanta, Boston, and Los Angeles.

TMRW McCarley said: “The addition of New York as a TGL team not only continues the success of adding major markets to TGL, but also adds an ownership group with strong ties to other major league teams and fanbases. Steve Cohen’s ability and willingness to operate, promote, and market this team to New York fans is a significant step as we build towards the launch of TGL.”

Atlanta’s TGL team is owned by US businessman Arthur M. Blank, Boston’s by Boston Red Sox and Liverpool FC owner Fenway Sports group, and Los Angeles’ as a joint venture between tech entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian and tennis greats Serena and Venus Williams.

NBA player Giannis Antetokounmpo and his brothers are also shareholders in the Los Angeles Golf Club team.

It means that the four confirmed TGL ownership groups own interests across either the NFL, Major League Baseball, National Hockey League, English Premier League, NASCAR, Major League Soccer, or the National Women’s Soccer League.

The TGL is set to debut in January 2024. In preparation, TMRW Sports has been expanding its executive staff in recent months. In June, the venture appointed Jarrett Dube as chief marketing officer, Jeff Neubarth as vice president of media production, and Ashley Chalk as vice president of global partnerships.

Cohen purchased the New York Mets, who will take part in the MLB 2024 London Series, in 2020.
