Giannis Antetokounmpo, the basketball icon from North America’s NBA, has become a co-owner of the Los Angeles team from the arena-based TGL golf competition being developed by TMRW Sports in partnership with the PGA Tour.

Giannis, a star for the Milwaukee Bucks, alongside his brothers Thanasis, Kostas, and Alex, is now a co-owner of Los Angeles Golf Club, with that news unveiled today (August 30).

They join sisters and tennis greats Serena and Venus Williams, and Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of social media site Reddit and founder of venture capital firm Seven Seven Six, as co-owners.

A competitive bid process has taken place to allocate ownership rights for the TGL teams, with the league set to begin next January after having been launched by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy via the TMRW Sports vehicle in 2022.

Aside from his playing career and his involvement with TGL, Giannis Antetokounmpo is also a minority owner of the Milwaukee Brewers from baseball’s MLB, while all four brothers are minority owners of Nashville SC from Major League Soccer.

He announced his involvement with Los Angeles Golf Club via a social media post, saying the brothers are “excited to announce our involvement as investors in LAGC – the inaugural team of TGL. We couldn’t be more excited to shape the future of this sport.”

The stadium-based TGL will have a “data-rich, virtual course complete with a tech-infused, short-game complex” and a “high-energy, greenside fan experience with every shot live within a two-hour, primetime televised match.”

Teams will compete in head-to-head match play across 15 regular season matches followed by semi-finals and finals matches.

Each team will comprise three PGA Tour players, with those committed so far being TMRW Sports’ co-founders Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm, Collin Morikawa, Adam Scott, Matt Fitzpatrick, Max Homa, Billy Horschel, Justin Rose, Xander Schauffele, and Rickie Fowler.

So far, aside from the LA TGL team, Fenway Sports Group has snapped up a Boston-based side, while AMB Sports and Entertainment has become the ownership group of an Atlanta-based team.
