Spanish men's soccer's top-tier LaLiga has claimed to have recorded total recurring income of €4.89 billion ($5.18 billion) during the 2022-23 campaign.

The league, which will be publishing its complete 2022-23 financial results in the next few days, has said today that the above figure represents a 15% increase from the equivalent 2021-22 numbers.

The rise in revenue has been attributed to significant growth in both the commercial and matchday income sectors, of 28.6% and 36.9% respectively.

The commercial revenue exceeded €1 billion for the first time in the 20-team league's history, while the total number of in-stadium spectators surpassed 15 million for the first time (with a 72% occupancy rate achieved).

Total income – the recurring revenue added to other sources of corporate income secured in 2022-23 – came to €5.69 billion.

LaLiga has said that “record investment in future growth by the clubs … means that the recurring turnover of the clubs will continue to grow in a healthy manner over the coming seasons.”

One of the main sources of new funding in 2022-23 was the Boost LaLiga project, launched in 2021 as a strategic partnership with CVC in which the two parties created a new entity to manage the league’s commercial rights.

It marked the first investment agreement by a private equity firm in a major European league.

By the end of this season, CVC will have completed its €1.9 billion investment in the top two Spanish leagues, as established in the signed agreement.

Under the terms of the Boost LaLiga plan, the funds received by the clubs are limited in nature, and can only be spent on several pre-determined areas.

At least 70% must be spent on investments for the growth of the club, while there is also an option to pay off debts and make transfers (maximum 15% for both areas).

LaLiga has a new title sponsor, EA Sports, as of the start of this season, as part of a wider overall rebrand of the league.
