The chief operating officer at German commercial broadcaster Sport1, Daniel von Busse, is set to step down from his post at the end of this month after four years in charge.
Von Busse, who took up his current position at the end of 2017 after initially joining the network in 2013 as head of licensing, will leave to take on new professional challenges, German media has reported.
It has also been reported that Sport1, which holds a series of top-tier rights across sports including soccer, tennis, ice hockey, motor racing and volleyball, will not appoint a like-for-like successor, at least initially, with von Busse’s role to be split internally between several other executives instead.
The chief operating officer secured a seat on the Sport1 managing board after he was appointed to that position, while he is also the managing director of the subsidiary Match IQ operation, a sports events promotion agency.
Before joining Sport1, he worked for prominent German pay-TV outlet Sky Deutschland for two years, while from 2008 to 2011 he worked for Constantin Medien, the organisation which then became Sport1 Medien.
Meanwhile, Sport1 has announced an addition at the senior management level – that of Thomas Kriner as director of digital and client sales in the business unit, taking effect immediately.
He will report to Matthias Reichert, another member of the broadcaster’s management board.
Previously, he was director of winter sports at the Infront sports and marketing agency, starting there in April 2019, while before that he was head of sales at the DAZN over-the-top international streaming service between 2015 and 2019.
Kriner has also worked for Sport1 before, during the time when the network was known as DSF, having been head of sales at that organisation between 2004 and 2009.
Amongst the top-tier sporting properties which the network has held rights to over the last 12 months – with those rights also extending on occasion through Austria and Switzerland – are North American motor-racing’s IndyCar, US ice hockey's NHL, Asian soccer’s AFC Champions League and domestic rights to the Women’s Volleyball Bundesliga.
In August, the broadcaster agreed to a rights deal with Super League Triathlon, the professional international triathlon series, in one of its most recent acquisitions.
