Huge audiences in both Spain and Argentina flocked to watch those countries contest yesterday's final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup men's soccer tournament.

In addition, there were significant viewing numbers for the final – which Spain won 1-0, after extra time – in a range of major markets across Europe.

In Spain, an average audience of 15.7 million tuned in to see their side secure the victory through a single Ferran Torres goal in extra time, while the match – held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, US – reached 20.1 million unique viewers overall.

It was shown in Spain on the La1 and La2 channels of national broadcaster RTVE, as well as via specific sports channel Teledeporte (also part of RTVE), and also through sports subscription streaming service DAZN (which snapped up a rights package in February).

La1's coverage was watched by the most viewers out of the above channel options, with a peak audience on that channel of 14.8 million, coming just as the final whistle blew.

The match, overall, achieved a viewing share of 87.1% in Spain.

For Spain's semi-final victory against fellow European heavyweights France, an average audience of 14.6 million was recorded.

This is Spain's second World Cup triumph, following on from their 2010 success.

In Argentina, meanwhile, the country’s late loss (as they defended the title won in 2022) secured a 46.0 rating via its free-to-air broadcast partners – Telefe and TV Publica – alone.

This means that 46% of the country (measurable audience) was watching those channels' coverage.

The game was also shown via pay-TV's TyC Sports, with that channel's coverage coming in with a 15.5 rating.

For their last-gasp semi-final victory over bitter rivals England, that game was watched in Argentina by around 31.8 million viewers on Telefe.

Outside of the home markets for the two teams involved, the final also attracted large audiences in the UK, Germany, France, and Italy.

In the UK, a peak audience of around 17 million watched the game, with an average audience of 12.1 million split across the public-service BBC and commercial network ITV.

Both of these broadcasters covered the iconic fixture, as part of their overall World Cup rights deal unveiled in late 2024.

The vast majority of that 12,1 million – 9.7 million – watched the action via the BBC's coverage, while only 2.4 million tuned into the game, and the surrounding preview and analysis content, on ITV.

In Germany, meanwhile, an average viewing figure for the game of 17.36 million on public-service broadcaster ZDF was recorded.

The Magenta TV service run by Deutsche Telekom also showed the fixture, but numbers generated by that broadcaster have not been released yet.

The game was by far the most-watched fixture at the World Cup not involving Germany – who were eliminated from the tournament by Paraguay at the round-of-32 stage.

The audience figure is significantly higher than that which was generated for the 2022 FIFA World Cup final – that clash, in which Argentina beat France on penalties, was watched by less than 14 million people in Germany.

Moving to France, free-to-air coverage of the final (provided by the TF1 channel run by M6) brought in 12.24 million viewers on average.

This represented a 59.2% audience share.

It is also around half the number of viewers who tuned into the 2022 final, with France competing.

Finally, on Italian TV, the game was the most-watched match on free-to-air TV of this calendar year.

Public-service broadcaster Rai reported an audience figure of nearly 12.5 million viewers for the fixture, via its main Rai 1 channel.

The 12.45 million who tuned in gave Rai 1 an audience share for the Sunday night clash of 67.95%.

As was the case in Spain, the game was also shown by DAZN, which has not yet released Italian viewing data.

As a contrast, the Italian national team's penalty shootout loss to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the playoff qualifiers for the tournament was only watched by 12.2 million Italians.

The 2022 final, meanwhile, was viewed by an audience of 12.94 million, also on Rai 1.
