Gol Play, the free-to-air sports channel owned by Mediapro, the Spanish sports rights and production agency, has secured rights to show Madrid Premier Padel, the third event in the top tour for the tennis-like racket sport.

Under the deal, Gol Play will broadcast two daily matches, as well as the semi-finals and finals during the tournament, which will run from July 17 to 23.

The tournament will also be available live on video streaming giant YouTube via Premier Padel’s official channel.

Gol Play Francesc Carbonell said: “Gol Play is excited to have secured the rights to Madrid P1 and to build partnerships with Premier Padel, the fastest-growing leading global circuit in the sport in the world.

“Padel currently has 25 million players worldwide, with increasing consumer demand for tournaments to be broadcast live, and we know our viewers will enjoy the action from Madrid.”

The tournament in Madrid is the third event of the 2023 season, which started with the Qatar Major in February.

“As our sport continues its rapid growth, we are expanding the reach of Premier Padel through our global broadcast partnerships to ensure that fans around the world have access to our full circuit.”

The 2023 season continues after it was announced in May that Premier Padel and bitter rivals the World Padel Tour (WPT) will merge into a single circuit next year after Qatar Sports Investment (QSI), owner of Premier Padel, agreed to acquire a majority stake in WPT.

An in-principal agreement was struck between QSI and Barcelona-based brewing company Damm, owner of the WPT in March, which will see QSI take a more than 50% stake in Setpoints Events, the company that manages the series.

Once the deal has been finalized, the two organizations apparently plan to launch a singular tour next year with around 25 tournaments. The 2023 seasons of both tours are being played out without change.

The agreement came after the two tours agreed to begin talks in January alongside the International Padel Federation (FIP) governing body and Professional Padel Association (PPA) players union for the international promotion of the sport.

The two organizations were locked in a bitter legal battle from February 2022 when QSI partnered with the FIP to create Premier Padel as a rival to the pre-existing WPT. At the time, the FIP claimed Premier Padel will be “the only official tour in the sport of padel” and “the only official tour under the governance and regulation of the FIP.”

In response, at the end of May 2022, the WPT started legal action against the FIP, the PPA, and QSI, claiming the trio was participating in “unfair competition” for attempting to exclude the WTP from the market and replacing it with the Premier Padel Tour.
