BeIN Media Group, the international pay-TV broadcaster, has secured the rights in Australia to all events organized by the World Athletics global governing body in a two-year deal.

The deal will see BeIN broadcast the ongoing Oregon 2022 World Athletics Championships and Budapest 2023 World Athletics Championship on its linear channels, as well as provide on-demand coverage of the events on its website and social media channels.

World Athletics' international rights, including those for Australia, are sold by Japanese agency Dentsu as part of its 10-year agreement that ends in 2029. Under that deal, Dentsu distributes the governing body’s international sponsorship and licensing rights, as well as media rights outside Europe and sub-Saharan Africa.

Broadcast rights in Europe and sub-Saharan Africa are held by the European Broadcasting Union and ESPN Media Distribution, respectively.

The 2022 World Athletics Championship started on Friday (July 15) after being delayed by one year due to conflicts arising from the Covid-19 pandemic and postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which was rescheduled to summer last year. It will run until July 24.

The rights deal in Australia builds on BeIN’s rights across 24 countries in the Middle East and Africa to World Athletics events in 2022 and 2023, announced in March.

Under that deal, the broadcaster will provide coverage of 10 top-tier events, including the 2022 and 2023 World Athletics Championships, in both Arabic and English. Highlights and clips will also be available at and on the broadcaster’s various social media channels.

BeIN’s other rights in Australia include European soccer’s Serie A, Ligue 1, Bundesliga, and Scottish Premiership, as well as the ongoing ATP and WTA tennis tours and the 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens in September.

Last week (July 14), the World Athletics Council awarded Tokyo, Japan hosting rights to the 2025 edition of the World Athletic Championships, which will be held in the $1.4billion national Olympic Stadium – the venue for last year’s delayed Tokyo 2020 games.

The Japanese capital was chosen ahead of Nairobi, Kenya, the region of Silesia in Poland, and Singapore, all of which the World Athletics body said “were deemed strong enough and experienced enough to host the event.”
