World Table Tennis (WTT), the commercial body for the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), has announced that Saudi Arabia will host a yearly top tier WTT Grand Smash from 2024 onwards.

The Saudi Smash will take place from May 4 to 11, 2024, at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, marking the first professional table tennis event to be held in the country. The sport has now been added to the list of sports that are now looking to gain market share in Saudi Arabia.

The $2,000,000 prize pool is the largest ever seen at an officially sanctioned table tennis event, and the men’s and women’s singles champions will each earn $65,000 and receive 2000 ITTF Table Tennis World Rankings Points.

Additionally, from September 23 to 26, WTT Youth Contender Riyadh will take place. WTT Youth Contender events involves age groups from 11 to 19, acting as a pathway for players to move through the WTT event pyramid and ITTF Table Tennis World Rankings.

Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, Saudi minister of sport and president of the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee, has said: "By introducing Saudi Smash, we add a further new international event to our growing list of major championships that we are honored to host in Saudi Arabia.”

Steve Dainton, WTT’s chief executive officer, added: "We are thrilled to host the first-ever Saudi Smash in Jeddah. Grand Smashes are WTT’s most prestigious events, and represents a significant milestone for table tennis in Saudi Arabia.”

Saudi Arabia joins Singapore as the second WTT Grand Smash host in 2024. WTT’s Singapore Grand Smash event is set to take place from March 10-17.

Grand smashes are the most prestigious events of the WTT Series, much like the grand slams in tennis.

The grand smashes have the biggest prize funds for players and their own branding to convey their significance.

Last week WTT announced the expansion of its partnership with sports-focused media agency Story10 to boost its coverage of the game.

Through the new deal, Story10 will broadcast highlights from ITTF events such as its 2024 Championships, Grand Smash, and WTT Champions and Finals events.

Story10 will disseminate these highlights across its network of digital channels, of which it has 8,500 outlets, and its 700 linear broadcast partners.
