The German city of Karlsruhe has submitted a bid to host the 2029 edition of the World Games, the quadrennial multi-sport event that traditionally features sports not contested in the Olympic Games.

Earlier this year, two cities from Germany, Karlsruhe and Hanover, initially expressed their interest in hosting the 13th edition of the event.

Karlsruhe has now been nominated as a candidate to stage the games by the German Olympic Sports Confederation, through a letter to the International World Games Association (IWGA) on Friday (April 12).

The IWGA opened the bidding process for the 2029 World Games in March 2022.

The decision on the host city will be taken by the IWGA executive committee and ratified by the annual general meeting at the beginning of May.

Karlsruhe is the first city to apply to stage the World Games for a second time after hosting the third edition in 1989.

The World Games are held the year after the Summer Olympics. The next edition is set to take place in 2025 in Chengdu, China.

José Perurena, IWGA president, said: “We are very pleased with the application of Karlsruhe, and will be working closely with them in the upcoming weeks.

“While our main focus is currently on the World Games 2025 to be held in Chengdu, China, it is reassuring and a very positive sign that we already have a lot of interest for the following edition. It makes it easier for us to plan the future.”

The previous edition of the multi-sport event was staged in Birmingham, US, in 2022. It was delayed by a year from its original date due to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics being itself postponed for 12 months as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
