The handball federations of Germany and France (DHB and FFH, respectively), have announced a joint bid to host the 2029 and 2031 International Handball Federation (IHF) Men’s World Championships.

Alongside the newly announced joint bid, another joint bid from Denmark, Iceland, and Norway, is also contending to host the two events, while there is rumored interest from other nations for solo bids.

The IHF tendered the hosting of the two events in April 2023, with the decision on a host to be announced on April 16, 2024.

In a joint statement, FFH president Philippe Bana and DHF president Andreas Michelmann said: “Very recently, the men's EHF EURO 2024, which took place in Germany, exceeded the million spectator mark in theaters – and France became, for the fourth time, European handball champion!"

"Both on a sporting and organizational level, we have proven that we are capable of offering remarkable and professional infrastructures, while creating a unique atmosphere thanks to the many enthusiastic handball fans!”

Germany co-hosted the IHF World Championships in 2019, alongside Denmark, as well as in 2007, and will host the 2027 edition of the event. Pre-reunification, West Germany and East Germany had hosted the event twice each, while the inaugural World Championship event was hosted in Nazi Germany in 1938.

France is the most successful team in the history of the IHF World Championships, having won the event six times, and has hosted it thrice, most recently in 2017.

Joint bids to host the event have become more common in recent years, allowing more national handball federations the chance to stage games. Besides 2019, which saw record attendances, the event was also recently jointly hosted in 2023 by Poland and Sweden, and in 2025 will be jointly held by Croatia, Denmark, and Norway.
