IMG to sell global media rights to International Champions Cup
IMG, the international sports marketing agency, was today appointed as the exclusive global media rights distributor of the International Champions Cup, the series of pre-season exhibition soccer tournaments involving various prominent clubs, for the next two editions.
The agreement with Relevent Sports, the creator and organiser of the ICC, excludes USA, Mexico and Central America, but covers the 2019 and 2020 tournaments.
International media rights to the ICC have been distributed by Hong Kong-based Catalyst Media Group, a sister company of Relevent, since its launch in 2013.
Matthew Kontos, managing director of the ICC, said: “Our global tournament needs an international partner to help reach our distribution goals and satisfy the viewing needs of soccer fans all over the world. IMG brings a unique expertise that makes them the ideal partner to continue to elevate the ICC.”
Michael Mellor, senior vice-president of football at IMG Media, added: “The ICC is the summer’s biggest club football tournament on the football calendar featuring the best players and club sides in the world. We look forward to working with Relevent Sports Group over the next two years and to increasing awareness of the ICC and ensuring the tournament is viewed as widely as possible across all forms of media platforms.”
The 2019 ICC will take place between 16 July and 10 August and feature 12 clubs - AC Milan, Benfica, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Juventus, Tottenham, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, Roma, Real Madrid and Chivas, the Mexican side that will become the first non-European participant in the tournament.
Rights to the ICC in USA, Mexico and Central America are held by ESPN, the international sports broadcaster, in a deal that was extended last month to 2021.
