Coca-Cola joins big name brands for Overwatch League season two
Coca-Cola, the US soft drinks giant, has signed up as a sponsor of the Overwatch League, the franchise-based eSports competition, for season two, which gets under way later this week.
Coca-Cola, a prominent brand in global sports sponsorship, has penned a multi-year deal with Activision Blizzard, the American video game developer responsible for creating the esports league, to become OWL's official global beverage sponsor across all non-alcoholic beverage categories.
Additionally, Blizzard has also named it the official global beverage sponsor for the broader Overwatch esports ecosystem as well as the official North American beverage sponsor across all non-alcoholic beverage categories for the Overwatch game.
Coca-Cola has been involved in eSports previously, having worked with the Riot Games’ League of Legends in 2016 and EA Sports’ popular soccer offering, Fifa, in 2017 and 2018.
Activation Blizzard chief executive Bobby Kotick, meanwhile, is a former Coca-Cola director.
Toyota, the Japanese automotive brand, and T-Mobile, the German telecommunications company, have returned for season two.
Toyota continues as the league's official North American automotive partner and will again sponsor the player-interview series, ‘Access Granted: Driven by Toyota’, while T-Mobile maintains its role as the official US wireless provider.
Multi-year deals were penned last year with hardware firms Intel and HP.Josh Cella, head of global partnerships for Activision Blizzard Esports Leagues, said: “Teaming up with world-class brands really elevates the Overwatch League and provides a wide array of quality products that we can feature for our fans. We’re also very excited to create original content for several of these deals that will entertain and educate our community.”
Season two begins on 14 February, with the live action in USA to be shown by ESPN, the Walt Disney-owned cable sports broadcaster, and Twitter, the social media platform, streaming highlights and a magazine show.
