Warriors named most popular NBA team online in China
The Golden State Warriors are the most popular NBA team online in China, according to a new report about the North American basketball league.
Chinese marketing group Mailman’s study claims that across China’s largest social media platforms, Weibo and Baidu, the Warriors had the largest support.
The results were based on the team’s number of followers, growth of followers, engagement and mentions.
The Cleveland Cavaliers, led by superstar Lebron James, were the second most popular team, followed by the Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers.
The Warriors, which arguably have two of the league’s best players in Steph Curry and Kevin Durant, were six times more popular than the average NBA team, according to the report.
Despite retiring from the NBA in 2016, former LA Laker Kobe Bryant ranks as the most popular player online in China, ahead of Curry.
The Brooklyn Nets’ Jeremy Lin, who is of Taiwanese decent, is the third most popular player, based on digital sponsorship coverage in China, Chinese website presence and mentions on social platforms.
Mailman estimates that the NBA is six times more popular online compared with European soccer, which includes England’s Premier League, Spain’s LaLiga and Italy’s Serie A.
However, the study claims that European soccer clubs are twice as popular in China as NBA teams.
Next month, the NBA will stage two pre-season matches in China, with the Warriors facing the Minnesota Timberwolves in Shenzhen on 5 October and then in Shanghai on 10 October.
