The highest-ever Spanish TV audience for a FIFA Women’s World Cup (WWC) soccer match was recorded yesterday (August 15), as Spain secured a place in the tournament’s final for the first time.
The team’s dramatic 2-1 triumph over Sweden, courtesy of an 89th-minute winner, was watched by an average of 1.92 million people on RTVE, the Spanish public-service broadcaster.
That equated to an average market share of 45.4%, with a peak audience of 2.77 million and a peak viewing share of 53.6%.
RTVE snapped up rights to this year’s WWC, taking place across Australia and New Zealand, in mid-June, after a protracted period during which governing body FIFA grew increasingly unhappy about bids from European broadcasters not reaching the expected financial level. The deal came as part of a wider tie-up between FIFA and the European Broadcasting Union.
Spain will play England in the final, after that side beat hosts Australia 3-1 earlier today (August 16).
It is highly likely that the encounter on Sunday (August 20) will break viewing records in both Spain and England.
