ATP Tour, ITF and Grand Slams Join To Create Tennis Masters Cup

The Grand Slam Committee, the ITF and the ATP Tour announced today (9 December 1999) that the ATP Tour World Championship and the men’s Grand Slam Cup have been discontinued and a new co-owned, end of year men’s tournament to be known as the Tennis Masters Cup has been created.

The new Tennis Masters Cup also heralds a new level of co-operation and commitment among all parties in several areas.

Included within this long-term agreement are: a coordinated approach to the consideration of changes to the Rules of Tennis governed by the ITF; a focused commitment to satisfy the independent scheduling goals of the Grand Slams, Davis Cup and ATP Tour; and the establishment of a decision-making body for the Tennis Masters Cup. This would bring everyone in men’s tennis to the same table once again.

Finally, the Grand Slam Committee is continuing to explore the possibility of producing a Grand Slam Cup for women players only although there is nothing to announce at this time.
