Scandinavian media and entertainment giant Viaplay has secured broadcast rights in Sweden to the upcoming FIS Nordic World Ski Championships.

The deal was struck with the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS), which owns and sells the broadcast rights for the competition.

The Nordic World Ski Championships will take place in Falun, Sweden, from February 24 to March 7, 2027.

The agreement also includes rights to the 2027 Alpine World Ski Championships in Crans-Montana (Switzerland), and the 2027 Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships in Montafon (Austria).

Pernilla Bonde, secretary general of the Swedish Ski Association, said: “We have great confidence in Viaplay as a broadcaster. They have broadcast the World Cup since 2021 and have extensive experience of covering major championships, including the World Championships in Trondheim 2025.

“They know winter sports, understand Swedish audiences and have built a strong relationship with viewers.”

Over 12 days, the world's top athletes will compete for World Championship medals in cross-country skiing, ski jumping, and Nordic combined.

Viaplay has been stripping back its presence in non-core markets to focus on the Nordic countries from where it first emerged.

In July, the broadcaster agreed to sell its operations in the Netherlands to Belgium's DPG Media for €142 million ($158.3 million).

After a bleak financial situation for Viaplay in 2023 and early 2024, to a large extent caused by unsustainable international expansion, its businesses in markets such as the US, UK, and the Baltics have all been sold off.

In terms of recent Viaplay activity across its core markets, the media giant extended its rights deal for North American ice hockey's NHL in the Nordics through the 2030-31 season in late May.
