That figure, $450 million, represents almost what the Islanders’ owners, Scott Malkin and Jon Ledecky, paid to acquire the team in 2014, $485 million.

Since then, the pair have invested heavily into the franchise, including the construction of the Islanders' $1.1 billion UBS Arena home (co-owned by Oak View Group).

In December 2025, Forbes valued the Islanders at $2.1 billion, a valuation powered by the UBS Arena’s utility as a concert venue, which ranked 15th on the list, roughly in the middle of the NHL pack.

By comparison, $3 billion would be enough to place at #6 on Forbes’ list, above prominent teams such as the Boston bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Philadelphia Flyers, and Washington Capitals.

Earlier in 2026, the Islanders tapped investment bank BDT & MSD,to search for new investment, resulting in the sale of a minority stake to investment banker David Shuman in August, and this subsequent 15% stake sale now.

The Islanders began its 2026-27 NHL season yesterday (September 30) with a 2-1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In the 2025-26 campaign, the Islanders missed out on the playoffs, finishing sixth in the Eastern Conference Metropolitan Division.

Since its foundation in 1972, the Islanders franchise has won the Stanley Cup four times, each coming consecutively between 1980 and 1983.

Since the end of the glittering period in the early 1980s, however, fortunes have been worse. The team’s last division championship came in 1988, and its last Stanley Cup Finals appearance came in 1984.
