The New Zealand Rugby Union and Rebel Sport today announced a new two-year agreement which will see the sports apparel and equipment retailer take over as naming sponsor of the Super 12.
The 2004 and 2005 competitions will be known as the Rebel Sport Super 12.
‘We’re delighted to enter into a partnership with Rebel Sport around the Rebel Sport Super 12,’ NZRU Deputy Chief Executive Steve Tew said.
‘We see the relationship as a good fit. The Super 12 is all about high-quality, fast-paced action, excitement and entertainment that are in line with both the values and products of Rebel Sport.’
Mr Tew said Rebel Sport’s history as one of the leading suppliers of Super 12-related merchandise made the company a natural naming rights partner for the competition.
Rebel Sport Managing Director Rod Duke said the sponsorship was an exciting and strategic opportunity for his company and they were delighted to be associated with such a high-profile brand.
‘The Super 12 is a great competition which complements our business,’ Mr Duke said.
‘We intend to be a strong partner of the Rebel Sport Super 12 and leverage our relationship with the competition to ensure that we remain the premium sporting retailer in New Zealand.’
Mr Duke said Rebel Sport’s nationwide chain of 16 stores would get in behind the competition and offer strong backing to New Zealand’s five teams.
‘It won’t matter which of our five teams you support, or where you live, there will be a Rebel Sport outlet nearby where you can get along, grab your supporters gear and join in the fun. In fact, there is a Rebel Sport store
in all but one New Zealand town that hosts a game next season and we intend that each store becomes the home of the local Super 12 team.’
The Rebel Sport Super 12 kicks off on 20 February when the Highlanders host the Reds in Invercargill.
