Oil and gas giant TotalEnergies has expanded and extended its association with road cycling's iconic Tour de France (TdF).

As announced yesterday, TotalEnergies has struck a sponsorship deal covering the event itself through 2028, as well as having extended its commercial tie-up as title sponsor of the Vendee-based Team TotalEnergies (which has been competing at the TdF for 25 years consecutively).

In addition, France-based TotalEnergies also becomes a jersey partner of the high-profile Ineos Grenadiers team, with that deal covering the upcoming 2025 edition of the TdF – set to begin on July 5 in Lille.

This builds on the existing industrial tie-up between petro-chemicals giant Ineos and TotalEnergies, primarily focused on joint projects in Saudi Arabia, and has come following a work-around on current rules on sponsorship deals within top-tier cycling (which do not allow brands to act as a main partner of more than one team competing in the same race).

Regarding the main sponsorship deal covering the TdF through 2028, struck with the Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) body which runs the tour, that tie-up begins with next year's edition, and also applies to the Women's Tour de France. The brand becomes a partner in the energy category.

From next year, TotalEnergies will – it has said – "put on a major promotional campaign and activities," across the 21 stages of the men's TdF and nine stages of the Tour de France Femmes.

TotalEnergies has also been a team title sponsor since 2016, meanwhile, and Patrick Pouyanné, chair and chief executive at TotalEnergies, has confirmed it will remain in that position for at least the 2026 season, adding that there is also an intent "to engage discussions for 2027 after the Tour de France.”

The oil and gas giant has stated that its associations with both Team TotalEnergies and Ineos Grenadiers "are strictly commercial and exclude any influence and/or interference in sporting matters and race strategies."

It added that it is "implementing internal rules to ensure this separation."

Indeed, TotalEnergies has not taken a role as a main Ineos Grenadiers sponsor, instead simply becoming a jersey partner.

The 2025 men's Tour de France runs between July 5 and 27, with the women's edition (beginning in the Brittany region) taking place from July 26 to August 3.

In terms of recent TdF commercial activity, earlier this month, the ASO added to its sponsorship stable by agreeing a deal with French IT firm Capgemini until 2029.

Late last month, meanwhile, the ASO and online accommodation booking service Airbnb unveiled a tie-up covering the men's and women's TdF, running through 2027. Airbnb will promote rentals along the 3,339-kilometer Tour de France route that spans multiple countries.

TotalEnergies is also a major sponsor of African soccer's CAF governing body, for the 2025-28 cycle. TotalEnergies has sponsored CAF competitions since 2016.
