Professional wrestling promotion World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has announced its acquisition of leading Mexican lucha libre wrestling promotion AAA in partnership with Mexico-based sports and entertainment holding company, Fillip.
The announcement was made during WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas, WWE’s flagship pay-per-view (PPV).
Additionally, the Worlds Collide PPV was announced, with the crossover event set to take place at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles on June 7. Worlds Collide is a WWE PPV established in 2019 as an interbrand competition between WWE's various brand divisions, and in this case, AAA will be involved.
AAA was founded in 1992 by Antonio Peña, with wrestlers including Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio, and Penta having wrestled for the promotion. The Peña family will continue to be involved in the AAA business alongside WWE and Fillip.
WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque said: “AAA has a rich cultural heritage with some of the most passionate fans in the world, and it’s an honor to work with the Peña family to embark on this journey.
“By bringing together WWE’s global capabilities and AAA’s amazing tradition, we look forward to an exciting future filled with new opportunities.”
