Power Failure Hits Sydney Airport

SYDNEY — A power cut delayed passengers for more than an hour at Sydney airport on Tuesday — entry point for thousands of visitors to next month’s Olympic Games.

International and domestic flights were hit as eight of the air traffic control system’s 12 consoles shut down to conserve power, Airservices Australia spokesman Richard Dudley said.

A newly-installed baggage system has already failed twice and a major power failure on July 6 affected 20 aircraft.

Dudley said Airservices Australia was required to give a full report to the Australian government by the end of August.

‘I don’t think there’s any question there is a heightened degree of scrutiny regarding the Olympics,’ he added.
