Salzburg Olympic Concept Now ‘Even More Compact’

The Salzburg 2010 bidding committee late Friday completed a round of considerations following the Report of the IOC Evaluation Commission. The outcome is a concept even more compact with only twelve venues for the Olympic Winter Games and Paralympics – less than other Candidate Cities. Curling will be moved from Kitzbühel to the centre Salzburg while Kitzbühel will stage the men’s downhill and freestyle as originally planned.

The Director General of the Salzburg bid, Egon Winkler was delighted with the outcome of the considerations:

‘We have this luxury problem of having so many world class venues. There have been discussions over the last days because the passion for winter sports in Austria is so unbelievable and everybody is eager to be a part of an Olympic bid. However, we were convinced by the Evaluation Commission that we should use fewer of these world class venues. The result is that we made a very strong bid even stronger. Moreover, I am very happy about our solution for Kitzbühel. Kitzbühel is for downhill skiing what Monte Carlo is for Formula One and of course we must have the world’s most spectacular slope included our bid. So in other words: Our passion made some action necessary and that will make our vision of taking the Winter Olympic Games and Paralympics to a new level even stronger. Today we took an important first step but I want to tell the world: You ain’t seen nothing yet!’

After the concentration of venues was decided, the mayors of Salzburg, Heinz Schaden, and Kitzbühel, Horst Wendling, in a joint statement expressed confidence about the outcome of the IOC members’ decision:

‘Now we are ready to present the best bid ever to the IOC members in Prague on July 2nd. With our improved concept for Olympic Games and Paralympics we are convinced that we can take the Olympic Games to a new level. Moreover, we have shown that we are ready to take any action necessary to deliver this vision’.
