Dodgers and Padres to meet as MLB regular-season games return to Mexico
Major League Baseball will stage regular-season games in Mexico for the first time in 19 years in May 2018, when the Los Angeles Dodgers take on California rivals the San Diego Padres in Monterrey.
MLB said that a three-game series will take place at the Estadio de Béisbol Monterrey on 4, 5 and 6 May. Both teams have a strong Mexican fanbase.
It will represent the third regular-season series to be played in Monterrey, but the first since the Padres and the Colorado Rockies met in MLB’s first international opening day in April 1999.
The Padres have been involved in all three MLB visits to Monterrey, as they also played a three-game series against the New York Mets in 1996.
MLB teams most recently visited Mexico in March 2016, when the Padres and Houston Astros met for two exhibition games in Mexico City. The Dodgers last participated in an international event in the 2014 opening series in Sydney, Australia, playing two games against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Stan Kasten, president and chief executive of the Dodgers, which lost to the Astros in this year's World Series, said: "These games will also mark the first time that the Dodgers are playing regular season contests in Mexico, something long overdue, given our rich player history and strong community ties to the country. The Dodgers have always been at the forefront of growing the game of baseball internationally and this trip reinforces this commitment, while at the same time giving our many fans in Mexico a chance to see us compete."
In July, MLB announced plans to stage 13 regular-season series in cities outside of North America from 2018 in a bid to boost the sport's popularity around the world.
The 2018, 2019 and 2020 seasons will all open in Asia, and, as well as the Monterrey games, a series is earmarked for next year in either Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic.
Two series will be staged in Mexico in April and May of 2019, ahead of a series in the UK in June, probably at London's Olympic Stadium.
Under the plans, MLB would return to the UK in 2020, with other series slated for Mexico and Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic. Two additional series are slated for Mexico in 2021.
