Genius Sports to commercialise Football Association of Wales' data
The Football Association of Wales, the national governing body for soccer, has agreed an official data deal with Genius Sports, the UK-based sports data technology company, which Genius said is intended to “drive commercial returns from FAW’s data in the media and regulated betting sectors.”
The FAW has awarded Genius Sports the non-exclusive, worldwide commercialisation rights for its data in the media and regulated betting sectors.
Under the agreement, Genius Sports’ statisticians will collect real-time data from competitions including the JD Welsh Premier League, Orchard Welsh Premier Women’s League and the JD Welsh Cup.
Jonathan Ford, chief executive of the FAW, said: “It is important that we as an association maximise the full value of the data from our major domestic competitions. To that end we are pleased to have formed this partnership with Genius Sports, which we believe will enable us to achieve this, as well as expand our audience.”
In March this year, eight European soccer leagues teamed up with Perform Group, Sportradar and Genius Sports in relation to the collection and supply of data to the betting industry.
It was the first multi-league agreement signed under the umbrella of the European Professional Football Leagues, and involves the Austrian Bundesliga, Belgian Pro League, Danish Divisionsforeningen, Israeli Professional Football League, Dutch Eredivisie, Norwegian Toppfotball, Swedish Föreningen Elitfotboll and the Swiss Football League.
Under the terms of the initial three-year agreement, the leagues are making available official betting data collection and supply rights for their matches on a non-exclusive basis.
