Newcastle to face Saracens in Philadelphia in Premiership-AEG tie-up
English rugby union’s top-tier Premiership is to stage only its second-ever match in USA, with Newcastle Falcons to play Saracens in Philadelphia this September.
The fixture, for which Newcastle will be the ‘home’ team, forms part of a new four-year tie-up with Anschutz Entertainment Group, the US events and venue owner, and there will be live coverage on national network NBC.
The game will take place at Talen Energy Stadium, the 18,500-capacity home of Major League Soccer team Philadelphia Union, on 16 September.
Saracens, now double European champions, featured in the only previous Premiership match to be held in USA, defeating London Irish at New York’s Red Bull Stadium in March 2016.
Mark McCafferty, the chief executive of Premiership Rugby, said on Wednesday: “Premiership Rugby is the best club league in the world and thanks to the support of our partners at NBC Sports, we are now developing a strong following in the USA. This new agreement with AEG will help take that to another level and today’s announcement is testimony to our collective ambition.
“Newcastle Falcons and Saracens have both been part of a record-breaking 2016-17 season for Aviva Premiership Rugby and now they will once again bring all the excitement, skills and intensity of the competition to the USA.”
NBC is in the first year of a three-year rights agreement with Premiership Rugby.
In the UK, the Newcastle-Saracens game will be shown live by BT Sport, the pay-television operator, which is the league’s main broadcaster, and Channel 5, the free-to-air commercial broadcaster, which recently committed to televise five games per season in a four-year deal starting in 2017-18.
