It has been confirmed by UEFA that the winners of this season’s English League Cup, the Worthington Cup, can be entered into the draw for the 2000/01 season’s UEFA Cup. For First Division Tranmere Rovers and the Premiership’s Leicester City this clarification could potentially lead to a lucrative trip to Europe. UEFA Cup regulations state that a number of high standard associations can enter three or four representatives into the UEFA Cup. This can include the winners of a domestic cup and two or three clubs finishing below the automatic UEFA Champions League positions. Furthermore, the winners of another domestic competition may be entered into the UEFA Cup at the expense of the lowest ranked league team. It is this scenario which has confirmed that either Leicester or Tranmere can be entered into next seasons UEFA Cup. Tranmere despite not being in the top English division could, if they were to win the final, be nominated by the English Football Association as an entrant for the 2000/2001 UEFA Cup. It has also been clarified by UEFA that even if the winner of the Worthington Cup has already qualified for a European club competition, the beaten finalists would not be eligible to enter. This is in I direct contrast to the FA Cup, where the beaten finalist can gain access to the UEFA Cup providing the winner has already qualified for the UEFA Champions League.
