Eurosport is to be the host broadcaster for the British Open which will be held in Brighton from November 8 to 14.

This is the first time Eurosport has been principal broadcaster at any UK tournament and marks a significant step in the expansion of its snooker coverage.

It is also a great opportunity for snooker which will now be seen by an estimated viewing audience of 250 million in 54 countries.

Eurosport will provide a minimum of 35 hours live coverage of the championship, to be held at the Brighton Conference Centre, in which Stephen Hendry will be defending his title after a record fourth British Open win last year.

Sir Rodney Walker, Chairman of World Snooker, said: ‘This is a major development which will have a significant impact on the future of the sport. Eurosport has recognised the value of snooker and it is most encouraging to have this quality broadcaster expanding its position in the UK market.

‘The popularity of the sport is growing even faster abroad and Eurosport’s continent-wide coverage gives us a tremendous opportunity to take snooker to a new level throughout Europe. Eurosport has a large proportion of young viewers which is vital for the future marketing of snooker.’

World Champion Ronnie O’Sullivan said: ‘This is great news for the growth of snooker in Europe. It’s important for our tournaments to be televised so that young players can enjoy snooker and learn from watching the professionals. I’m sure there will be some talented players coming through in Europe within the next few years.’

Eurosport is the most widely available TV channel in Europe reaching over 98 million homes and 250 million viewers in 54 countries.

Eurosport’s extensive coverage of the most famous national and international competitions is just one of the many reasons why it is considered Europe’s leading multi-sport network.

Charlie Burt, World Snooker’s Business Development Director, said: ‘Eurosport is a brilliant media partner. We welcome the quality of production and enthusiasm which has made their programming actively welcome throughout Europe. As a result of our partnership the people of Europe have a greater opportunity to watch and participate in snooker.’

Maxime Cassis, Secretary of the European Billiards & Snooker Association, said: ‘It is becoming increasingly clear that the popularity of snooker is growing rapidly in many areas of continental Europe. One of the key reasons for this is the widespread coverage from Eurosport.

‘The EBSA welcomes the news that Eurosport are to televise the British Open and we look forward to watching snooker of the highest quality at this tournament.’
