World Cup Final Celebrations With Qatar 2022 at Souq Waqif

Qatar 2022’s Fan Zone has proven to be the venue of choice for Doha residents to watch the events unfold at the current FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Thousands of people have visited the Fan Zone since the grand opening on June 11 when hosts South Africa held Mexico to a 1-‐1 draw.

On Sunday the World Cup Final is sure to see a packed tent at Souq Waqif, and Qatar 2022 in collaboration with Doha Film Institute (DFI) have planned a fun-‐filled evening for attendees.

The events will commence at 7.30pm with the screening of 7 one-‐minute films the outcome of a Doha Film Institute workshop organised in conjunction with Qatar 2022. Budding filmmakers with a passion for football and cinema were asked to submit their proposals for one-‐minute films with selected participants invited to participate in a workshop under the mentorship of Lebanese filmmaker Chadi Zeneddine. The ages of the first-‐time filmmakers range from 11 to 40 and are from diverse backgrounds including Qatar, Tunisia, France, India, Pakistan, Egypt and Sudan. The 11-year old filmaker is the youngest ever participant at DFI’s workshops and has produced a football themed animated film.

Amanda Palmer, Executive Director, Doha Film Institute, said: “Our ongoing series of workshops are designed to connect with the community through people’s passions and interests, which made this initiative with Qatar 2022 an ideal opportunity. People have come together to enjoy this World Cup and also to support the goal of bringing the tournament to Qatar in 2022, and our workshop participants have really reflected this excitement in their short films. Sport and cinema make a powerful team, and we look forward to future collaborations with Qatar 2022.”

Qatar 2022 communications director Nasser Al Khater said, “We are delighted to work with the Doha Film Institute to showcase the passion for football in the country in a unique way and it is fitting that the films will be screened on the night of the World Cup final in front of a packed audience at our Souq Waqif Fan Zone. The sheer number of people that have filled our Fan Zone throughout the World Cup and expressed support for the bid demonstrates the enthusiasm of people of all ages and nationalities in Doha for football and for bringing the
World Cup to Qatar in 2022.

Fans will be able to watch the final in high definition pictures on the big screen and enjoy the activities and amenities on offer in the Fan Zone including an exhibition on the history of the World Cup, beginning with the inaugural event in 1930 and running through to Italy’s triumph in Germany in 2006. Every official FIFA World Cup poster is on display as well as ten-‐minute video clips, giving fans of all ages the chance to remember classic moments and learn about the history of the tournament. Attendees can also learn about Qatar’s bid for 2022 and view a stunning visual display of the proposed stadiums and the science behind the innovative cooling technologies that will be utilised.

Visitors to the Fan Zone will have a special opportunity to win a trip to Madrid courtesy of Qatar 2022. Participants will be invited to fill in forms with their names and contact details and a winner will be chosen at random from a machine at Souq Waqif on World Cup Final night. The winner of the competition will be presented with two flight tickets to Madrid and match tickets to a Real Madrid match of their choice. Five runners-‐up will be selected and will be presented with Apple IPods.
