Lausanne, Switzerland, April 10 2015 – WISE – Work In Sports Exhibition is very pleased to present a dedicated panel on Sports Diplomacy & Development, delving into the important topics of gender equality and women’s empowerment in sports, which will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2015 at 15:00 in the main conference room at Expo Beaulieu Lausanne, Switzerland.

PANEL ON SPORTS DIPLOMACY & DEVELOPMENT

The panel will feature a diverse group of women for whom sports served as a force for change, with a particular focus on how sports serve as a critical tool for the advancement of women and girls around the world.

The U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Pamela Hamamoto, will kick off the panel with personal insights into how participation in sports empowers women and girls, and better positions them for success in whatever path they choose to follow. She will highlight the passage of the U.S. "Title IX" as a game changer that significantly increased opportunities for female athletes across the country, although much work remains with respect to gender equality in sports.

Trina Bolton from the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs Sports United office will share how well-crafted sports diplomacy programs, such as the "Empowering Women and Girls through Sports Initiatives" and "U.S. Department of State and Global Sports Mentoring Program" can contribute to meeting diplomatic and development goals.

Honey Thaljieh, co-founder of women’s football in Palestine and the first woman in the Middle East to obtain a FIFA Master, will be sharing her views on how sports can serve as a tool for breaking through all the social and political barriers. Honey is a role model to women and girls throughout the Arab world by becoming the first female employee by FIFA coming from the Middle East. She is now their Corporate Communication Manager on the areas of education and health, gender equality, life skills and peace initiatives through Football

Donna De Varona, Olympic medallist in swimming, ground breaking women in sports casting, and expert for the IOC Women's Commission, will moderate the panel discussion. This panel will definitely set a landmark in how sports can be a powerful means in peace, politics and gender equality among others.
